So far in this series I’ve looked at the essence of vampire sex culture. Vampire sex practice differs from our own because of one fundamental aspect, in that vampires recognize, and implement boundaries in sexual relationships through a system called private sex.
The private sex of vampires gives those who apply the rules the freedom to indulge in all forms of sexual activity (the choice made for personal preferences), with one or more lovers (the number according to individual sexual drive). Vampires call their lovers favorites, because vampires have sex for reasons beyond just physical pleasure, and they can have many such lovers providing sexual pleasure at all levels from kissing to coitus.
Multiple Lovers
Every vampire will have at least one partner for serious sex, and this most favored lover is sought before all others to address their urgent sexual need. It doesn’t matter the gender of their special favorite, vampires accommodate, and vampires can have more than one lover of each sex. But because each vampire will have such a favored lover, then a kissing partner to one is a serious sex partner to another vampire. These two vampire lovers can be favorites to the same vampire providing restricted private sex, but it is extremely rare for serious sex lovers to share their respective special favorites.
The sexual affairs of vampires gets very complicated quickly. The relationships between favorites of various rank is often complex. Control of the vampire sexual interactions is only possible with the rules of private sex governing what they do and with whom. The control of private sex does two things—prevents jealousy and fighting, but importantly, it regulates the sex vampires seek and achieve.
Vampires need sex, for feeding and regulation of bodily function, but they also need the effects of sex, in the form of pleasure. From our prospective, the vampire appears dissolute. The vampire sexual appetite seems insatiable. But with every thing about vampires, there are reasons for the intense focus on sex. Part of their supernatural existence determines the level of sex and dictates their necessity for sex.
Immortality—The Curse
Vampires are of the preternatural domain, meaning they live forever by design, by not getting sick or old, but you can still destroy a vampire. The vampire also has supernatural powers, many gained through an evolution of our literature about the vampire. One of their most important properties is their psychic energy, a force defining their nature, and one power requiring constant replenishing by drinking blood.
Once regenerated, their psychic powers need channeling to be useful. Female vampires also use their psychic powers to enhance their femininity, and so exchanging psychic energy is essential for the female factor. The problem is, in focusing their powers to use them, vampires need sex.
Vampire immortality is a function of existing beyond time, almost outside it, and this dimensional status is constrictive. To relieve them of their static existence, the pleasure of sex releases the vampire from their eternal restriction. Sensual gratification then stops the persistence of time against the vampire. The curse of immortality is more than simply living forever.
Sexual Potential
It doesn’t matter how slight or brief, all sexual activity successfully provides the relief the vampire craves. But like any source of satisfaction, the more potent and the longer it continues, the better the result. Unfortunately, the pleasure can also get habit-forming, and vampires tend to suffer sexual addiction in their incessant bid to attain freedom.
Vampire sex is often excessive. The intensity of serious sex provides all the benefits of sex, the embrace of their favorite enhancing the pleasure, so necessary for conquering time. Vampires then don’t want the sex to stop. This is one reason why they don’t see the orgasm as the end of sex, since the pleasure doesn’t end on the simple conclusion of the act.
With the vampire sexual culture dominated by the achievement of physical pleasure but not determined by the attainment of the climax, then it is easy to see the necessity of multiple lovers. One lover couldn’t possibly satisfy all the needs in sex. Although it is difficult to sexual exhaust a vampire, they understand the function of their bodies and the ways to necessarily enhance their experience. Vampires do not want to dull their response, so they mix the serious sex with private sex of their lower rank favorites, to keep a balance of sensations.
Sexual Secrets
Motivated by the need to control their sexual experiences, vampires created sexual rules regulating their behavior, no matter how unrestrained the sexual activity, and irrespective how complicated their affairs. Vampires also then recorded the various techniques for achieving the ecstasy only sex provides. As their knowledge base expanded, so did the accumulated volumes, and it is in the context of finding a reason for their being that vampire sexuality is best understood.
While we want sex, because we are aware of our sensuality, vampires need sex because they are aware of their own existence. They cannot escape the attraction of sex, just as we can’t escape the inevitability of our mortality. But unlike our curse, for the vampires there is a way out.
The only escape from the monotony of pure physical sex is finding love. With love, the vampire finds relief from the anguish associated with their supernatural existence. Love is a powerful force, the vampires recognize love as the most powerful force and one controlled exclusively by male vampires.
How vampires find love is another story—a very long story indeed. It is the process of finding love that forms the basis of my novel, Vampire Sexual Secrets. Next, I want to take a break from talking about sex, to talking about writing about sex. Following this will be the mechanics of writing erotica, because sex has its challenges when combined with the romance.
